The Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuary is part is the habitat of over 100 rare fauna including elephants, wild buffaloes, wild boar, porcupines, tigers and a variety of snakes. A crocodile breeding centre and a lion safari park are also located here.
The endangered primates, the lion-tailed macaque and the Nilgiri languor share the ever green forest. Other animals like bonnet macaque and giant squirrels are seen here. Some of the rarest medicinal herbs are also seen here.The famous Aga sthyamala and the Meenmutty falls form part of this sanctuary.
The 128sqkm Neyyar sanctuary occupies a beautiful wooded and hilly landscape, dominated by the peak of Agasthya malai. With a rugged topography of meadows and slopes, altitudes ranging from 90 to 1800 meters above sea level, the sanctuary is contiguous with the Kalakkadu Tiger Reserve and Mundanthurai Wildlife Sanctuary in TamilNadu. It is occupying the basin of the rivers Neyyar, Mullayar and Kallar. This popular picnic spot has a watch tower too.
The best way to explore the sanctuary is by boat. Climate conditions are moderately hot and humid, and hottest in March and April. Accommodation is available at the Forest Department Inspection Bungalow and Irrigation Department dormitory. The sanctuary is accessible by boat, jeep or on foot up to Kottur Dry Stock Farm and Amboori, beyond which access is limited to boats. On the upper reaches of the Neyyar reservoir there are two magnificent waterfalls; Meenmutty and Kombaikani waterfalls.
Home of some of the rarest medicinal herbs, this dam is a popular picnic spot. The lake formed by the dam across the river is shaded the bluest, making boating irresistible.
