Banasura Sagar Dam is a part of Indian Banasurasagar Project
which was started in 1979. This dam powers the Kakkayan Hydro Electric project
in Kerala which was built to satisfy the irrigation and drinking water needs.Banasura
Sagar Dam is approximately 25km towards the north west of Kalpetta and it is
considered to be the largest earthen dam in India and the second largest in
Asia. This dam is one of the major tourist attraction in the district of
Wayanad, because of its scenic mountain surroundings.
It is located in the
midst of lovely, mist-clad hills with a wildlife sanctuary and park full of
flowering trees. With its clear waters Banasura is a wonderful picnic spot.The
major attraction about the dam is a set of small islands which was formed when
the reservoir submerged the surrounding areas. These islands with the
background of Banasura hill provide a hypnotizing sight to tourists. Speed
& pedal boats are available to ride.
